God of War Laufey moves from Feb. 16 to May 20, 2027 on PS5. See the U.S. price, what pre-orders include and why the date shift matters.
God of War Laufey is now a May 20, 2027 game. Santa Monica Studio announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4, that the PS5 exclusive moves from its original Feb. 16 date, a delay of just over three months, with the studio saying it wants to finish the game and push it "to its fullest potential." As of Nov. 5, PlayStation's U.S. store still lists the Standard Edition at $69.99 for pre-order.
What is the new God of War Laufey release date?
May 20, 2027, on PlayStation 5 only. The studio's statement, quoted by Game Informer and IGN, says it has "made the decision to delay God of War Laufey's release to May 20, 2027," and that the team will be "back to share more updates soon." No other platform has been announced.
The studio did not name a specific problem. Engadget's report says only that the extra time goes toward pushing the game to its fullest potential, so treat any theory about what went wrong as speculation.
How much does God of War Laufey cost in the U.S.?
PlayStation's U.S. store page lists two editions as of Nov. 5:
- Standard Edition: $69.99
- Digital Deluxe Edition: $79.99
According to the PlayStation Blog, anyone who pre-orders gets the Last Wish Armor Set, a Phranque Golden Leaves cosmetic appearance and an in-game resource pack. On the physical Standard Edition, Sony says the bonus arrives through a download code. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds the Dark Alchemy armor set, blade, bow scales and catalyst, another resource pack, a digital mini artbook and the digital soundtrack.
There is also a $149.99 Collector Box with a light-up Faye statue, a 51-card Oracle Deck and a mini artbook. The PlayStation Blog post that announced it has been edited to show May 20, 2027 as its date as well. It is sold separately from the game, in limited quantities, direct from PlayStation in the U.S.
What happens to my pre-order?
We did not find a Sony statement on pre-order changes, so we can't say whether anything happens automatically. The store listing and the PlayStation Blog now read May 20. If you ordered a physical copy from a retailer, check the date on that retailer's order page, because stores update on their own schedules.
Nothing about the price or the bonuses has been reported as changing. If the pre-order is tying up money you wanted for the holidays, read the cancellation terms on wherever you bought it before deciding.
Why does the date matter for the 2027 calendar?
CBR reports that the move takes Laufey out of a crowded first quarter of 2027, after several games, including the PS5 title Until Dawn 2, appear to have shifted into the new year to stay clear of Grand Theft Auto VI. IGN makes a similar point, saying the early-2027 window had become exceptionally crowded. The studio itself cited only polish.
May 20 is also the date CBR lists for the Switch 2 port of Persona 4 Revival, and it lands just before the June summer showcase season, when new reveals tend to crowd out older games. IGN speculates we could hear more at The Game Awards or in a State of Play before the year ends. That is a guess, not an announcement.
Our take
A delay is annoying, and this is an expensive game to wait on. But three months is mild next to the long slips some big titles suffer, and Laufey is a new lead character after two Kratos games, so the studio has more to prove than usual. The unusual part is the timing: Sony had just opened Collector Box pre-orders on Oct. 13, only weeks before moving the date, which suggests the decision came late.
For U.S. buyers the practical advice is simple. Nothing here forces you to act. If you pre-ordered for the bonus armor, you keep it. If you were saving your PS5 budget for February, that money now has a free winter. Our guess is that the next real news is a trailer or State of Play slot, not another date change.
