Bethesda named The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel on Nov. 3. Here is what the title says about the setting, what is confirmed and how far off launch may be.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Bethesda Game Studios officially named the next Elder Scrolls game: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The reveal, with a new logo, came in a video from longtime franchise director Todd Howard as the studio marked its 40th anniversary, according to IGN. No gameplay, release date or platform list came with it.

What did Bethesda confirm about Elder Scrolls 6?

The name and the logo, and not much else. Xbox Wire published the official name reveal on Nov. 3. Afterward, Bethesda posted on X that development continues and that it will be some time before it is ready to share more, as quoted by IGN.

That line matters more than the logo. If you hoped a name drop meant a trailer is around the corner, the studio is telling you otherwise.

IGN also reports that Bethesda says The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is still the studio's most played game, a figure it clarified refers to total lifetime players.

Where is Sentinel, and why does the setting matter?

Sentinel is a city in Hammerfell, the province on the west side of Tamriel, according to IGN. It sits on the northwest coast beside Iliac Bay. Hammerfell lies west of Cyrodiil, where Oblivion took place, and southwest of Skyrim.

Polygon notes that the reveal included a short quote from a Moth Priest named Yazar, who serves High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell. Polygon reads the date attached to that quote, 4E 206, as placing the game about five years after the events of Skyrim. It says the setting had been rumored for a while and that this reveal firmly points to Hammerfell.

Polygon adds that players of The Elder Scrolls Online will already know parts of Sentinel, since five areas of the city are explorable there, including the docks, a royal palace and a large open-air marketplace. Take the lore reading as Polygon's interpretation. Bethesda has not explained the plot.

When will Elder Scrolls 6 come out?

There is no date. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier wrote on Bluesky that the game is "still more than two years away", as IGN relays. That is reporting, not an announcement, so treat it as a rough guide. It would put Sentinel no earlier than late 2028.

The game was first announced in 2018, and IGN notes that the Xbox chief executive, Asha Sharma, said in August that she had watched a live playthrough, which Bethesda has also described as playable. IGN adds that a showcase appearance at next June's Xbox event is a reasonable hope, though that is its speculation.

What is confirmed and what is not

  • Confirmed: the title, the Sentinel and Hammerfell setting, the logo, and that development continues.
  • Not confirmed: a release date, a price, a platform list including PlayStation, and any gameplay.
  • Reported only: a launch more than two years out.

Our take: this is a good day for lore fans and a quiet one for everyone else. A title is the smallest possible sign of life after eight years, and the studio itself is lowering expectations. If you want something to play while you wait, Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls Online are the two games the reveal leans on, and Bethesda has not announced anything beyond them.
