Christopher Nolan's tale of rival magicians gets a 20th-anniversary reissue in January.
Disney is bringing Christopher Nolan's 2006 thriller The Prestige back to cinemas for its 20th anniversary, in 70mm and IMAX formats, in January. TheWrap's report does not yet list specific theaters or exact dates, so keep an eye on Disney's announcements.
The quick facts
- The film stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as rival stage magicians in Victorian London.
- It earned about $109 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, according to TheWrap.
- Disney distributed it in the US and Canada under the Touchstone Pictures label, which no longer exists. Warner Bros. handled the rest of the world.
- It arrived a year after Batman Begins. TheWrap notes it was the first Nolan film to use IMAX cameras, tested here ahead of The Dark Knight.
Why now
The report connects the reissue to the strength of Nolan's latest release, The Odyssey, which has grossed nearly $1.8 billion worldwide, including more than $500 million from IMAX screens. Large-format showings are clearly a profitable corner of the market, and a film about illusion, built on misdirection and patience, is a natural fit for a big, immersive screen.
If you have only seen it at home, this is the moment to see what the format adds. Our advice: go in knowing as little as possible about the ending, and let the film do its trick.
