Sports Interactive is offering a free Launch Preview of Football Manager 27 on PC and Mac from October 29, after a rocky FM26 year, Eurogamer reports.
Football Manager 27 will be playable for free on PC and Mac for five days later this month, a first for the series. Eurogamer reports that developer Sports Interactive is calling it an "industry first" for a game of its kind, with every game mode available.
How the free window works
According to the official Football Manager site, the FM27 Launch Preview runs from 6pm GMT on October 29 until November 3. It is available through Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, with no extra sign-up needed. Players simply download the game from their preferred platform.
The Launch Preview replaces what the series previously called the Beta or Advanced Access period. The studio says it is meant to be closer in quality and finality to the launch version than earlier early-play builds, though it carries a note that some club data is still going through approval by rights holders and may not accurately reflect real-world information.
Pre-orders and saves
Pre-orders open alongside the free period and carry a 10 percent discount, Eurogamer reports. Buyers keep access to the Launch Preview from 6pm GMT on November 3 until the full release on November 10. The discount applies to purchases through SEGA-approved digital retailers, per the studio. Game Pass players can continue through their subscription, but the paid Launch Preview is limited to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers.
Saves started during the free period carry over into both the paid preview and the full game, so nobody has to start a career again.
The context
Eurogamer describes the move as coming after a difficult year for the franchise. Football Manager 26 was the first release in two years, after Sports Interactive cancelled FM25 to move the series to the Unity engine. Eurogamer says the new engine enabled systems that weren't possible before, such as separate in-possession and out-of-possession formations and tactics, but at the cost of many classic features. Its reworked interface also drew criticism, and the outlet notes the game still sits at a Mostly Negative Steam user score almost a year after launch.
For FM27, the studio promises a clearer interface and an improved match engine. It is also adding Tactical Tweaks and Tactical Effectiveness, which Eurogamer says supplement the returning touchline shouts system. Whether those changes land will likely decide how much trust the studio regains. A free five-day trial at least suggests Sports Interactive is confident enough to let players judge it for themselves.
