## Key takeaways

- Zach Cregger's Resident Evil went on sale digitally Nov. 3 for $24.99, per IGN and Polygon, about 45 days after its Sept. 18 theatrical release.
- Screen Rant says the 48-hour rental is expected at $19.99; Sony's page lists 4K, Blu-ray and DVD, with no disc dates confirmed.
- IGN says Sony's Netflix 'Pay-1' deal means it will most likely stream there first in early 2027; no firm date is out.
- IGN says the film has crossed $400 million worldwide; Screen Rant lists a 96% Rotten Tomatoes critics' score.

Zach Cregger's "Resident Evil" is now available to buy digitally in the U.S., just over 45 days after it opened in theaters on Sept. 18. As of Tuesday, Nov. 3, IGN and Polygon both report a $24.99 purchase price on services such as Prime Video, and Sony Pictures' own movie page now reads "Watch at Home Now."

## Where can you watch Resident Evil at home right now?

You can buy it from the major digital stores. Sony's page lists Apple TV, Prime Video and Fandango as places to get it, and Screen Rant reported that the film would reach all major VOD platforms starting at 12 a.m. ET on Nov. 3. Amazon's listing, according to Screen Rant, went up a little earlier, at 10:30 p.m. ET on Nov. 2.

Screen Rant also says the rental price is expected to be $19.99 for 48 hours. That figure came from the outlet's reading of the listings and not from Sony, so check the price on your own store before you press play. We did not see a rental price on Sony's page.

## When does Resident Evil come out on 4K, Blu-ray and streaming?

Sony's page shows 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD as "Watch at Home" formats, and IGN says the movie is up for preorder on all three, though the DVD still has no release date. Screen Rant reported there was no word yet on a 4K or Blu-ray date as of Nov. 2. If you want a disc, the safest move is to preorder from a retailer that lets you cancel and watch for the date to appear.

For streaming, IGN notes that Sony Pictures signed a "Pay-1" deal with Netflix earlier this year, so the film will eventually stream exclusively on Netflix, most likely in early 2027. That "most likely" is IGN's. Neither IGN nor Polygon gave a firm streaming date, and Polygon says the date is unknown.

## How big a hit is Resident Evil?

A big one. Polygon says it made $60 million domestically in its first week and became the most successful Resident Evil film. IGN says it recently crossed $400 million worldwide, and that another $30 million would give it a shot at the top 10 highest-grossing horror movies of all time. Screen Rant put the figure just under $400 million before the crossing: $157.3 million in North America and $242.6 million overseas. Our earlier story on the milestone is linked below.

Critics agree with the crowds. Screen Rant lists a 96% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes from 303 reviews and a 90% Popcornmeter score. Those numbers are the review sites' and can move. IGN's own reviewer, Tom Jorgensen, told skeptics to set aside what they expect from a Resident Evil movie, and IGN says the game series got a bump too: Resident Evil 2 Remake sales on PS5 were up more than 50% the week the film opened.

## What is the movie about, and is it a game adaptation?

Sony describes it as a reinvention of the franchise with an all-new story. It follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier who ends up in a race for survival as a night collapses into chaos. According to Polygon, he agrees to deliver a last-minute package to Raccoon City and learns it is the cure for a virus spreading through the area. It does not follow Leon Kennedy or any one game, and IGN says Cregger set out to adapt "the feeling of playing Resident Evil" and not a specific title.

The film is rated R. If you are buying for a household with younger players who know the games, that is worth keeping in mind.

## What is confirmed and what is not?

- Confirmed: the digital release on Nov. 3, the $24.99 purchase price reported by two outlets, and Sony listing 4K, Blu-ray and DVD formats.
- Reported, not confirmed by Sony in what we read: the $19.99 rental price, and the early 2027 Netflix window.
- Unknown: the DVD, Blu-ray and 4K release dates, and the exact streaming date.

## Our take

For $24.99, buying makes sense mostly if you plan to rewatch it, or want to see what the fuss was about with friends this weekend. If you are a patient viewer, a 2027 Netflix stream will probably cost you nothing extra. Our own view is that the film's strongest pitch is its mix of horror and humor, and that loud group viewings tend to suit this kind of movie better than a quiet solo night. That is opinion, not a rating, since we have not scored it.
