A trailer for the Mass Effect game BioWare was building has leaked, and the people who have watched it, including reporters who have confirmed it is genuine, say it looks like the real thing. The footage is titled *Mass Effect: Universe*. It surfaced a day after EA shut down BioWare and cancelled the project, which means this short clip is probably all anyone will ever see of it.

## What the leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer shows

According to Engadget, the trailer was posted to Reddit from a burner account by a user claiming to be an EA employee. A text card at the start says it was assembled from in-game footage using pre-production assets. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier separately described it as a real trailer for the game BioWare was developing until its closure, and The Verge reports that IGN says it verified the clip as legitimate.

The scene is simple. A man in an N7 trench coat, presumably the new protagonist, walks into a bar. An asari approaches him and starts a conversation. He talks about his time in the military and says he has picked up a “new line of work.” Then comes a montage of the shooting, powers and fighting that fans of the series will recognise. The asari turns hostile, Liara T'Soni steps in, and the bar erupts into a brawl before the title appears.

## Why fans are fixated on the aliens

Polygon says much of the reaction has centred on the supporting cast. A helmeted male quarian features prominently, and the series has only ever had one recruitable quarian, Tali'Zorah. Polygon also notes that an old internal BioWare document for *Mass Effect 2* once described two unused male quarian squadmates, so the idea is not new to the studio.

Polygon points out that the asari look closer to their original-trilogy designs, which fans read as a reversal of the facial changes in *Mass Effect: Andromeda*. A krogan appears alongside the protagonist too, and the outlet says that raises questions about whether this universe had cured the genophage. That is fan speculation, not anything EA or BioWare has said.

## What happens to Mass Effect now

Engadget notes that EA has said it will not continue development following the closure. The last new Mass Effect game was *Andromeda* in 2017, and the franchise has since been kept alive by the 2021 *Mass Effect Legendary Edition* remaster. The Verge adds that Amazon is reportedly still working on a Mass Effect series for Prime Video.

Our read: a leak like this is bittersweet in a specific way. The footage is rough by design, so it says little about how the finished game would have played, and nobody outside BioWare can judge that now. What it does show is a studio that had a clear tone and a cast fans were already attached to. Whether EA ever acknowledges the clip is another matter. As of Friday morning, neither EA nor BioWare had commented in any of the reports we read.
