Manchester United's bad start to the season got worse on Sunday, and Michael Carrick's job looks shakier for it. Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford, according to BBC Sport, leaving United with one win from eight Premier League games and sitting 16th, 14 points off the top.

## Bournemouth's afternoon at Old Trafford

BBC Sport's player ratings give Rayan the opener, a first-time finish after a free-kick from Justin Kluivert. Adrien Truffert then seized on a slip from Leny Yoro to set up the second, which Marcus Tavernier finished, and Evanilson added a third after a mistake from United keeper Senne Lammens. The BBC marked Tavernier, Evanilson and Rayan 8 out of 10 and no United player higher than 6.

The numbers are grim. The BBC says United have won seven points from eight league games, their lowest at this stage since 1986-87. It was their heaviest home league defeat since another 3-0 loss to Bournemouth in December 2024, and they are now eight games without a win in all competitions, a first since late 2015.

## The Fernandes problem

The biggest talking point before kick-off was Carrick leaving captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench, per the BBC. That followed Fernandes questioning the manager's tactics after a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como on Wednesday, and defender Lisandro Martinez apologizing for remarks that criticized the club's hierarchy. Harry Maguire wore the armband instead, and the BBC reports that Fernandes stayed on the bench all game. Carrick was asked about it afterwards, and the BBC headlined his answer as "He was fit and available."

Carrick, 45, took interim charge in January after Ruben Amorim left and was given the job permanently in May after United finished third and qualified for the Champions League. The BBC says he has won only two league games since.

## What people said

"See what happens," Carrick told BBC Sport when asked about his future. He added that the emotions at the final whistle were something he had not really felt before. Maguire said the squad backs him, but that "something's got to change". Fans sang Carrick's name at full time, though the BBC says that turned to boos once the players walked off.

Gary Neville told Sky Sports that supporters know what is coming. He said the club's sporting leadership was probably going to make a necessary but unpopular decision on Monday, and that the owners, the sporting department and the players had all "badly let this football club down". Clinton Morrison said the players were "not good enough", while Ashley Young said they did not look like a team.

## Our take

This is analysis, not reporting. The loudest message from the stands was split: love for Carrick, anger at everyone else. That does not usually save a manager for long, and a captain who ends the week benched after publicly doubting the plan does not look like a squad pulling in one direction. Still, an eight-game winless run with a manager who finished third six months ago suggests the problem is wider than one dugout. Whether the club agrees will probably be clear within days.
