Apple's five new products go on sale tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 6, and pre-orders are still open as of Thursday, Nov. 5. According to MacRumors, the group is an OLED iPad mini, an iMac with the M6 chip, and three MacBook Pro models, including Apple's first touchscreen laptop. Prices run from $699 to $3,399. Here is what each one costs and who should wait.

## What does each new Apple product cost in the U.S.?

MacRumors lists these starting prices for the Nov. 6 launch:

- iPad mini with OLED display and A20 Pro chip: $699
- iMac with M6 chip: $1,499
- 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 chip: $1,999
- 14-inch MacBook Pro with OLED touchscreen: $2,899
- 16-inch MacBook Pro with OLED touchscreen: $3,399

MacRumors says shipping dates generally look good for launch-day delivery. The exception is the base 14-inch touchscreen MacBook Pro: Space Black ships in three to four weeks and Silver in seven to 10 business days. If you want one under the tree, the order button matters more than the launch date.

## Is the new iPad mini worth $699?

It is a real upgrade and a real price jump. Engadget reports the new iPad mini costs $200 more than the old one, starting at $699 for 128GB, and tops out at $1,249 for a 512GB model with cellular and the nano-texture glass finish. For that money you get an OLED screen with up to 1,200 nits of peak HDR brightness, an 8.5-inch display with bezels 24% thinner, and the 2nm A20 Pro chip, which Apple says is up to 2.7 times faster in graphics than the A17 Pro.

It is also Apple's first water-resistant iPad, with an IP67 rating, and it adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Apple's new C2 cellular modem. The trade-offs, according to Engadget: no ProMotion, so the display stays at 60Hz, and only two colors, Midnight and Starlight. Apple's hardware engineering chief Dave Pakula told an interviewer the display experience is about more than one spec. Engadget says plenty of users on X were still disappointed.

## What is different about the touchscreen MacBook Pro?

Apple's own MacBook Pro page lists two lines. The new one has a PROLED XDR display, described as tandem OLED, with touch, up to 1,000 nits sustained full-screen brightness, up to 2,000 nits peak, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. Apple lists it from 3.0 pounds for the 14-inch with M5 Pro.

The cheaper M6 line keeps the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display, with 1,600 nits peak brightness, no touch, and a starting weight of 3.5 pounds for the 14-inch with M5 Pro. Apple gives up to 24 hours of battery life for both. So the $900 gap between the base M6 14-inch ($1,999) and the OLED touchscreen 14-inch ($2,899) buys a better screen and touch, not simply a faster chip. We could not find independent benchmarks or reviews in the sources we read, so performance claims here are Apple's.

## Who should buy now and who should wait?

Buy the iPad mini now if you wanted an OLED small tablet and can live with 60Hz. Wait if you were hoping for the old price. The iMac at $1,499 is the plain choice for a desk that needs an all-in-one, and nothing we read argues for waiting on it.

The MacBook Pro choice is harder. If you draw, edit video or read in sunlight, the OLED screen is the reason to pay $2,899. If you mostly type, the $1,999 M6 model is the sensible one, and it ships faster. Reviews have not landed yet, so anyone who can wait a week or two will see how the touchscreen holds up in real use before spending nearly three thousand dollars.

Another timing note. MacRumors also notes that tomorrow could be the last chance to return an iPhone Duo bought on launch day, so Nov. 6 is a busy Apple date for returns as well as deliveries.

## Our take

This is a launch built on screens, and most of it costs more than last year's version. The iPad mini jumped $200, and the MacBook Pro now starts a $900 step above its cheaper sibling for the OLED panel. That is a clear message about where Apple wants buyers to go. Our advice is to treat tomorrow as a delivery date, not a deadline. Prices for Black Friday are likely to move on older Apple gear first, and these new models are unlikely to see discounts this month. That last point is our guess, not something Apple has said.
