## Key takeaways

- Apple announced an M6 14-inch MacBook Pro ($1,999) and an M6 iMac (from $1,499) on Oct. 27.
- Pre-orders start Oct. 28 and the computers ship Nov. 6, according to Apple.
- Apple claims the M6 is up to 30% faster in graphics and 25% faster in AI work than the M5.
- Neither computer changes outwardly, so the upgrade is entirely inside, Ars Technica reports.

Apple announced a refreshed 14-inch MacBook Pro and a new iMac on Oct. 27, both running the new M6 chip. The MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 and the iMac at $1,499, according to TechCrunch and Ars Technica. Pre-orders open Oct. 28 and the machines ship Friday, Nov. 6.

## What Apple announced

Apple's press release says the M6 has a 12-core CPU, which is two more cores than before, and a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators built into each core. Against the M5, Apple claims up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster AI workloads. These are Apple's own numbers, not independent test results.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro comes in space black and silver, with up to 24 hours of battery life, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. TechCrunch reports that memory starts at 16GB and goes up to 32GB. Ars Technica adds that storage can climb to 4TB.

## The iMac

The iMac keeps its 24-inch 4.5K Retina display and seven colors: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver. Apple says on-device AI work runs up to five times faster than on the M4 model.

Ars Technica reports the iMac comes in two versions. The two-port model with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU starts at $1,499, and the four-port model with 12 cores of each starts at $1,699. Faster 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet is now an option.

## What stays the same

Ars Technica points out that neither computer changes outwardly. The new iMac looks like the M4 one, and the MacBook Pro looks like its M5 predecessor, so the upgrade is entirely on the inside. Ars also notes that this MacBook Pro is the entry-level model, and that Apple skipped the M5 for the iMac, going straight from the M4.

## Our take

This reads as a practical refresh, not a headline-grabber. If you bought an M4 iMac a year or so ago, nothing here is urgent. If you are still on an Intel iMac or an M1 laptop, Apple's claims are far bigger for you, though they are still claims until reviewers get units.

The timing is the odd part. Apple put these out a day before its "Pro and tell" event on Wednesday, Oct. 28, which a Verge preview said was built around a touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro. That is still a rumor. If it shows up, this $1,999 model starts to look like the cautious option in the lineup, and waiting a few hours before pre-ordering costs you nothing.
