The checkout chore list is on its way out at Airbnb. The company has told hosts it will no longer allow house rules that make guests do work a cleaner would normally handle, according to The Verge and Airbnb's own host guidance. The policy applies to reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026.

## What the new policy says

The Verge reports that Airbnb's updated policy says hosts cannot ask guests to "complete tasks that require significant effort or time, or would typically be performed by a cleaner." Airbnb's Resource Center article, published on October 20, gives concrete examples of what is and is not acceptable:

- **Dishes:** guests should not be asked to wash and put away dishes, but hosts can ask them to put used dishes in the sink.
- **Laundry:** guests should not be asked to strip the beds or start a load of laundry, but they can be asked to gather used towels.
- **Trash:** guests should not be asked to take garbage off-site, but they can be asked to separate trash and recycling into designated indoor bins.
- **Utilities:** guests should not be told to avoid an advertised amenity such as air conditioning, but they can be asked to turn it off when they leave.

## Where the rules will appear

Airbnb says house rules and requests now sit together in one place in the listing editor, and that the separate checkout instructions tab is gone. Hosts can choose from seven standard rules, including two new options: a maximum number of overnight guests and a requirement to lock up at checkout. Everything else is a request.

According to The Verge, the rules and requests will be displayed more prominently on listings. If a host leaves chore requests in place after the policy starts, guests may see an "includes cleaning requests" alert. Hosts also cannot add extra rules through messages or on signs around the property. Airbnb says all rules must be visible when a guest books.

## Exceptions and pushback

Airbnb says its judgement of what is reasonable depends on context, including the type of listing and local factors. Its own examples are asking guests to dispose of trash in an animal-proof container in bear country, or to limit shower time during local drought restrictions.

The Verge notes that some hosts have pushed back on Airbnb's forums, saying certain restrictions pose health risks and arguing that guests can simply avoid listings with strict rules.

## What it means for your next trip

If you are booking before November 20, the old rules still apply to that reservation. Airbnb says changes only affect future bookings, and the rules on a listing when you booked are the ones that count. For stays booked after that date, a long chore list should become much rarer. Hosts who ignore the policy risk a warning on their listing and, if the problem persists, lower search visibility, according to Airbnb's help pages.

It is still sensible to read the rules and requests section before you book. Reasonable asks, such as gathering towels or turning off lights, remain fair game, and Airbnb says guests are encouraged to follow them, even though only the standard house rules are strictly enforceable.
